I've been wanting to expand my garden for a while now, but not quite sure how to do it. I tried to dig in the back a bit, but the ground is very hard and full of rocks and roots. I was inspired when I saw Wendy & Jeff's garden beds, that of course you can create raised beds, and just put new dirt right on top of the ground, almost anywhere. I told Wes, and he started a project! Here are some pics.
Here's the
before shot.

We went and got some wood, and here's Wes getting ready to start the project.

In action...

Construction complete!

We also took our first trip to the local recycling yard where you can get all the compost you can load into your car in 15 min for free. As you can see, it only filled up half the bed. We could have gotten more in 15 min, but the Prius was a little heavy laden.

We had to go back a few weekends later to get more compost to fill the whole thing. Here's the
after shot with the finished product!

Complete with a little movable seat that Wes made for me with the extra wood, and you can see some of the plants we transplanted to their new home.

Meanwhile our cherry tomatoes are doing well. Sun sugars are deliciously sweet.

Lettuce was doing good, it's a bit wilty now, but not sure how long to wait to harvest it.

I planted a dahlia.

Trimmed the roses...

And these little guys are happy too. I forgot what they are called though.

Since the beds, I've planted corn, bok choy, beets, scallions, and carrots! The seedlings are starting to come up!
aw, looks great! isn't it fun to dream up a project and then have your hubby go do it? :)
ReplyDeleteLOL! Yes!
ReplyDeleteWow! I didn't know you had such a green thumb! Your boxes look great. We actually just put in two similar boxes in front of our church to grow veggies for the day center!
ReplyDeleteWell, whether or not I actually have a green thumb will soon be determined ;)
